During the summer heatwave of 2022, O M Hines Ltd received an emergency call from a new customer near Taunton, Somerset, after their heating oil tank developed splits shortly after being filled.
The tank had just been topped up with heating oil when the increased pressure revealed cracks in the tank, which then began to leak. Within 40 minutes of receiving the emergency call, O M Hines Ltd attended the property to assess the situation and prevent further oil loss.
After discussing the options with the customer, we pumped approximately 2,500 litres of heating oil from above the damaged area to help prevent contamination and allow the remaining oil to be safely managed.
During the assessment, we also identified that the existing oil tank was being poorly supported by its current stand. We advised the customer that a new, properly constructed base should be created in a suitable location and positioned at the correct distance from the property to meet OFTEC requirements.
Fortunately, relocating the tank created an unexpected benefit for the customer by opening up a previously restricted pathway around the house.
Our digger was used to create a level area within the bank, followed by the construction of a retaining wall to safely hold back the soil. A new pipeline was then trenched to the new tank position.
A new 2,500-litre bunded oil tank was installed, providing the ideal capacity for the heating oil safely recovered during the emergency call-out.
At Hendy Hines Ltd, we always aim to provide the most cost-effective oil tank solution for our customers. Where possible, we look for the most appropriate tank position while considering OFTEC regulations, site conditions, access and the customer's budget.
This emergency oil tank replacement near Taunton demonstrates how careful planning can turn an unexpected oil tank leak and emergency call-out into a safer, more practical and long-term solution for the customer.
